Ikea announces record player that might actually make it to stores this time

Ikea, which has never been afraid to branch out into new product categories, has announced that a record player will be released this fall as part of its new Obegränsad line. The record player was created in partnership with house music ensemble Swedish House Mafia and features a bulky design similar to that of many of Ikea's other consumer gadgets. Along with it, the Swedish shop has announced the addition of an armchair and a desk to the collection.

This isn't the first time Ikea has announced a record-playing device. It revealed in 2018 that it was working on a turntable alongside Teenage Engineering, which it aimed to ship the following year. The player, however, did not make it into the final collection, according to a Teenage Engineering support page.

In an interview about the new record player on Ikea's website, Ikea engineer Carmen Stoicescu alluded to this previous attempt. "When the topic was posed to me, I simply replied, 'We tried to construct a record player before, so maybe we could utilise the same supplier?'" she explains. There are a few hints about the player's capabilities in the text, such as the fact that it has a built-in preamp, is powered through USB, and has a removable cartridge and needle. In a news statement, Ikea also mentions that the player will operate with its Eneby Bluetooth speaker, but that it will only work through a wired connection because it doesn't support Bluetooth. Aside than that, technical information is scarce. The record player may or may not have built-in speakers.

These are the queries we've posed to Ikea, along with inquiries regarding the device's estimated price. It'll be available this fall, along with the Obegränsad collection's other over 20 items.
