Pokemon Designer James Turner Leaves Game Freak

Pokemon Designer James Turner Leaves Game Freak

Game Freak has let go of James Turner, the art director for Pokemon Sword and Shield and the designer of various Pokemon from recent generations. Turner announced on Twitter earlier this week that he and game designer onebitbeyond had formed All Possible Futures, a new game studio. Turner later acknowledged that he had left Game Freak to start the new studio, but that he "still loves" the company in a follow-up comment. Turner's All Possible Futures has released a trailer for their first game, The Plucky Squire:

Turner was the first Westerner to design a Pokemon and was responsible for the creation of several well-known Pokemon species. Shadow Lugia, Vanillite, Vanillish, Vanilluxe, Vullaby, Mandibuzz, Phantump, Trevenant, Buzzwole, Guzzlord, Poipole, Naganadel, Gigantamax Gengar, Centiskorch, Sinistea, Polteageist, and the Galarian Zigzagoon series were all developed by Turner. Turner also worked on Pokemon Colosseum and Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, two Pokemon offshoot games. Turner had been a Game Freak employee since 2010.

Game Freak stated earlier this year that Junichi Masuda, the director of multiple Pokemon games, has resigned from his role. Masuda moved to a new job at The Pokemon Company, where he would have more control over the entire Pokemon franchise rather than just the games. Despite the fact that Masuda and Turner did not work on Pokemon Sword and Shield or Pokemon Legends: Arceus, their departure from Game Freak is just another proof that the Pokemon games have genuinely entered a new generation.
