NordVPN launches new Meshnet feature to connect user devices

NordVPN has come up with a brand-new feature that allows users to connect directly to other devices instead of using a VPN server to route their traffic through.

The new functionality is called Meshnet. It allows NordVPN users to connect to other devices without having to first reroute traffic through their VPN servers. The new Meshnet, according to NordVPN, opens up a whole new universe of possibilities for using NordVPN.

"Whereas a regular NordVPN connection sends your internet traffic through servers, Meshnet allows you to establish your own NordVPN server, made up of solely your own or your friends' devices, independent of their location," said Vykintas Maknickas, Product Strategist at NordVPN. A NordVPN membership is all that is required."

How Meshnet can be used

Customers of NordVPN can use the new Meshnet feature in a variety of ways, according to the company.

They may easily, swiftly, and securely exchange and share files with their families, friends, and coworkers. Two-way consent is required for this, according to NordVPN, which reduces the danger of the feature being used for nefarious purposes or putting user privacy at risk.

Meshnet can be used as a virtual Local Area Network for online gaming with friends or family (LAN). This means that gamers can play multiplayer games without the use of LAN wires with whomever they've connected to via Meshnet.

You may all join to the same server and play games together, even if your pals live in different towns or even other countries.

You can also use Meshnet to reroute your internet traffic through a local device if you are travelling overseas for work or vacation. Simply connect the device you're travelling with to a laptop you've left at home, and you'll be able to browse the internet, stream TV shows and movies, and do much more using the same IP address as at home.

In the same way, you can connect to a friend's device in another country. If you wish to access US-based content and have a friend in Washington DC, you can connect to their device and utilise it just like a NordVPN US-based server.

A game changing feature

NordVPN is clearly ecstatic about the potential Meshnet provides for its users, calling the new tool "a gamechanger" that "will fundamentally redefine how our people use NordVPN."

Vykintas Maknickas notes that their tech wizards have been working on the functionality for several years, having initially conceived of it when developing their wildly popular NordLynx utility, which was the first to provide the WireGuard protocol to NordVPN users.

It will be interesting to see if NordVPN users embrace Meshnet in the same manner they did that development.

But one thing is certain: NordVPN's new feature places it once again in the forefront of VPN companies who embrace innovation as a method to set themselves apart from the competition.

In addition to its basic VPN service, NordVPN offers NordPass, a next-generation password manager, NordLocker, an encrypted cloud storage solution, and NordLayer, an advanced network access security solution for companies.

Its VPN services also include a number of unique features, such as Double Hop VPN servers, Onion Over VPN servers, and Threat Protection, which protects NordVPN users from security concerns by blocking harmful websites, malware, trackers, and advertisements.
